There are hikes, and then there are those hikes—the kind you’ll remember because of the scenery, the company, and the way your legs complain for days afterward. Our recent adventure to Piatra Singuratică, a wild, jagged peak in the Eastern Carpathians, was exactly that kind of hike.

This time, we weren’t alone. Joining us were two fellow Italian motorhomers, Giambattista & Cecilia, the kind of people who pack a kitchen sink and a sense of humor in their campervan. Together, we set off for a day that combined fresh mountain air, panoramic views, camera gear juggling, and just enough drone flying to make the local birds curious.

If you’ve followed our travels, you know we’re a bit picky about parking spots and never really do campsites. This time, we all converged at a rustic little parking area near the trailhead—perfectly off-grid, with enough space for four wheels and big smiles.

Giambattista and Cecilia greeted us with espresso and an Italian flair that immediately made us feel like this hike was going to be less “strenuous” and more “la dolce vita with walking boots.” Of course, walking boots quickly proved essential once the trail started getting serious.

Piatra Singuratică, meaning “The Lonely Rock,” lives up to its name. The mountain juts sharply into the sky, standing apart from the surrounding peaks with sheer cliffs and spires that look like something out of a fantasy novel.

The trail begins with a gentle forest walk, winding under tall beeches and fir trees. Birds chatter overhead and wildflowers peek out between moss-covered rocks. We followed a marked path that’s popular with local hikers but still quiet enough to feel like a secret.

After about an hour, the forest gives way to rugged terrain. The ground gets rockier, and the trail narrows along steep cliffs. It’s not a walk in the park anymore—more like a mini adventure course, where careful foot placement is a must and those with a fear of heights might want to take it slow.

One of the most memorable moments was reaching a narrow ridge that seemed to split the mountain in two, offering 360-degree views of the surrounding Carpathians. It’s a bit exposed (translation: don’t look down too much), but the adrenaline rush is well worth it.

Giambattista, the unofficial trail guide, kept the mood light with jokes and dramatic reenactments of “mountain warrior” moves. Cecilia kept the snacks coming, which in our book, is the real survival skill.

Along the way, we spotted an array of wildflowers—edelweiss peeking shyly from crevices, bright orange lilies waving in the breeze, and clusters of delicate violets carpeting the forest floor. Birds like the woodpecker tapped a steady beat, while distant calls from mountain goats echoed through the valleys.

We even caught a glimpse of a shy chamois darting between rocks—a fleeting moment that made all the uphill effort feel like a gift.

Piatra Singuratică has inspired legends and stories for centuries. Locals tell of spirits guarding the mountain—keepers of the forest and cliffs, said to appear as glowing orbs on misty nights. It’s a place that feels alive, as if the rocks themselves whisper ancient tales.

Historically, this mountain was a natural lookout for local shepherds and villagers during times of unrest. Its solitary position made it ideal for spotting invaders or signaling nearby settlements with fires. The ruggedness of the terrain helped protect communities from raids during medieval times.

There’s also a curious tale about a hidden cave near the summit where a bandit once hid treasure. Many have searched but none have found it—perhaps the mountain is still keeping its secrets safe.

I carried my Canon EOS R5 with the trusty 24–105mm lens, my favorite for hikes because it’s versatile enough for sweeping landscapes and close-ups of mountain flora. Also in the pack was my DJI Mavic 3 drone, which I was itching to fly once we reached the summit.

The hike’s beauty made photography irresistible, but managing gear on uneven terrain is always a balancing act. At one point, while lining up a shot of a jagged ridge glowing golden in late afternoon light, I nearly took an unintended tumble. Thankfully, the camera was safe, though my dignity took a small hit.

We stopped often for pictures, but also for moments of silence—just soaking in the vastness around us. At the summit, the drone came out and took to the skies, giving us breathtaking overhead shots of the dramatic cliffs and the surrounding Carpathian forest sea. Watching the drone dance among the rocky spires felt like orchestrating a tiny flying ballet.

Reaching the top of Piatra Singuratică was like unlocking a secret level in a game.

The view stretched endlessly: rolling hills, dense forests, and distant mountain ranges folding into the horizon. Clouds lazily drifted past, sometimes casting shifting shadows that made the rocks look alive.

Giambattista and Cecilia claimed their prize—Italian espresso brewed over a portable stove, poured into tiny cups that made the climb all the sweeter. We all took a moment to breathe, eat, and snap those obligatory summit selfies that, let’s be honest, are mostly about proof we survived.

  • Giambattista’s Dramatic Fall: While demonstrating “proper hiking technique,” he slipped on a mossy rock but caught himself with a flourish that looked rehearsed. We applauded.
  • Cecilia’s Snack Breaks: Never underestimate the power of biscotti. They might just be the secret to the best hikes.

  • The Great Bug Attack: Just as we settled for lunch, a cloud of mosquitoes decided we looked delicious. Hilarity (and frantic waving) ensued.

Our day hiking Piatra Singuratică was more than a walk in the mountains—it was a reminder of why we travel this way. With good friends, a sense of humor, and a bit of gear, even the toughest climbs become stories worth telling.

Whether it was the crunch of boots on rocky paths, the shared laughs over spilled espresso, or the soaring drone shots capturing the wild beauty beneath us, this hike left us feeling connected—to nature, to each other, and to the joy of exploration.
