There\u2019s literally <i>no designated parking for large vehicles<\/i>. So we nosed the 7\u2011metre van to a lay-by around 0.5km from the dam\u2014your only option\u2014then walked back to the dam and finished with a brisk 200\u2011metre hike to the trailhead. You can only imagine the looks we got lugging camera gear and drone kits across a narrow roadside verge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was the day park. Overnight, we parked 2 nights off-grid on the shores of Lake Gilau, around 5km from the dam. We could have spent the night there.<br \/><strong>\ud83d\udeb0 Services<\/strong><b><br \/><\/b>Water can be taken from the lake if needed, no other services around the parkups.<br \/>\ud83d\udce1 <strong>Internet &amp; Signal<br \/><\/strong>Excellent signal and internet at the parkup, day parking and throughout the hike.<br \/><strong><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><\/span><strong>\ud83d\udee3\ufe0f Access &amp; Space<\/strong><b><br \/><\/b>Both parkings are easily accessible and with reasonable amount of space. The forest soon gives way to scree and shale, with switchbacks that seem to mock your progress. We hit:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span>\u2022<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><b>Sections of 20\u201330\u00ba incline<\/b>\u2014you\u2019re practically climbing a staircase embedded in a vertical slope.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span>\u2022<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><b>Metal rope\/cable segment<\/b> (30 m long) to help your hands-over-head scramble. I can\u2019t not carry it.\u201d Eastern European masochist motto?<br \/>Here\u2019s what I lugged uphill\u2014and what I thought I <i>needed<\/i> to get the perfect photo coverage.<br \/>Camera bag weight at summit time: akin to carrying two bowling balls up a mountain. But gear zeal is real. Not home to cartoon tourists, but real Ursus arctos. Our tactic? Noise. Gabriela led the chorus with \u201cmake some noise\u201d\u2014so we howled, whistled, and laughed\u2014then practically sprinted to distract any wildlife. Result: birds startled, bears not so much. If you\u2019re hiking solo, sing louder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I had visions of my R5 or 16\/35 lens slipping from my grip and tumbling into the abyss, but thankfully the rope was sturdier than my Photoshop mask saves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here, is a constant steep incline \u2014occasionally interrupted by a leveled forested section\u2014that has you questioning every life choice since university. It\u2019s not a pleasant warm-up; it\u2019s <i>declaratively intense<\/i>. This meant <i>total solitude<\/i> and <b>uninterrupted exploration<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We were the <b>only souls on the summit<\/b>\u2014the mountain all ours (apparently, bears don\u2019t care about drone photography).<br \/>The view? Spectacular doesn\u2019t even begin to cover it: a sharply jutting peninsula wrapped in turquoise-green water, with endless forest. With a squint of an eye, I can see how it could evoke Vietnam\u2019s Halong Bay<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\ud83d\ude81<b> Drone First Move &amp; R5 problems.<\/b><b><\/b><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">First move: unpack drone, clear propellers, launch. Within minutes it soared into the sky, capturing a 180\u00b0 arc of cliff-face peninsula, dam expanse, and endless forest. A sweeping B-roll shot worthy of any adventure film. Aerial video for the Win.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the bird was flying, I switched to the R5 + 16\/35\u202fmm for dynamic wide angle shots\u2014rocks in foreground, peninsula in background, forest edges in mid, that kind of stuff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A few iPhone snaps too\u2014because Instagram.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As soon as the R5 was on the tripod snapping, I realised that a never-seen-before error was displaying on the back LCD and pictures were not being saved on the SD card. Go figure, today of all days. It took a whole hour of testinng to understand that the problem was a communication error between the lens and the adaptor. Luckly I had the widom to lug a second adaptor up the mountain, so problem solved.
